By August 2004, Kristopher Roe, frontman for the Ataris, had had enough. After spending 18 months on the road with practically no break, he was sick of touring, aggravated with his band mates and pained by the bitter end of a six-year relationship. He was also completely disillusioned with the kind of music the band was playing. In other words, he needed a break. So, the Ataris took some time off, and Roe spent months reading, writing and searching for meaning in his life.
During that period, bassist Mike Davenport and drummer Chris Knapp left to pursue other interests that were outside those of the band. For a while, with four studio albums and countless tours behind them, it looked like the Ataris had reached the end of the road. Then, guitarist John Collura gave Roe a demo CD of a batch of new, more adventurous songs he had written.
